- Master Craftsmen & Quality Workmanship: As Middle Tennessee’s premier pool builder, we pride ourselves on craftsmanship and attention to detail. We don’t do “cookie-cutter” pools – every project is unique. We are licensed general contractors and use only top-quality materials and equipment. - Personalized Service: As a family-owned company, we believe in treating customers like family. When you contact us, you’ll speak with a friendly local expert, not a call center. In fact, our owner Mark Allison meets clients personally for on-site consultations to discuss your project. Throughout the build, you’ll work with the same dedicated team of designers and builders, ensuring consistent communication and a smooth process from start to finish. Our owner is frequently on-site alongside our skilled crew, who you’ll get to know by name. This hands-on approach means we truly care about every detail and your satisfaction.
- End-to-End Project Management: Building a pool involves many steps; design, permits, excavation, construction, finishing, and more. We handle every detail from design through construction in-house. Unlike some contractors who juggle dozens of pools at once, we schedule projects carefully to maintain focus and timely completion. You’ll have a dedicated project manager keeping you updated at each stage. Our goal is to make the process stress-free and enjoyable for you, while delivering on time and on budget.
- Licensed and Insured: Allison Companies is fully licensed, bonded, and insured for pool construction in Tennessee. In short, Allison Companies offers the experience, craftsmanship, and personalized service you need to bring your dream pool to life. We’re not just building a pool, we’re building a relationship and an outdoor space you will love for years to come.
Custom Concrete (Gunite) Pools – Unlimited Design Potential
One of our specialties is designing and constructing custom concrete pools (also known as gunite pools). Gunite pools are the pinnacle of luxury and customization in the pool industry. We often recommend gunite when homeowners want a truly one-of-a-kind pool tailored precisely to their preferences.
Why choose a gunite pool? Here are some key advantages:
- Unlimited Design Flexibility: Gunite (a form of shotcrete concrete) is applied on-site, which means we can create any shape, size, or depth you desire. Unlike pre-formed pools, a gunite pool has virtually no limits – if you can imagine it, we can build it. Whether you want a naturalistic lagoon, a modern geometric design, or a pool that curves around existing landscape features, gunite makes it possible. This flexibility also allows us to integrate custom features directly into the pool structure. For example, we can build tanning ledges, swim-up bars, beach entries, waterfalls, rock grottoes, integrated spas, underwater seating, and more as part of the gunite shell. Your pool will be a true original, designed just for you.
- High-End Features: With gunite construction, the sky is the limit on special features and aesthetics. Some of our favorite custom pool design options include infinity edges (vanishing edge pools), zero-entry “beach” pools, integrated spa spillovers, dramatic waterfalls and water features, decorative fire bowls or fire pits, and vibrant LED lighting – just to name a few. Love the idea of an infinity pool overlooking a view? We can do that. Want a built-in spa or a kiddie splash area? No problem. Rock walls, fountains, mosaic tile art, you name it – our designers will incorporate whatever features fit your vision and lifestyle. Gunite pools truly offer a bespoke luxury experience, completely customizable to you.
- Unmatched Durability and Longevity: A well-built concrete pool is extremely durable and meant to last for generations. The gunite structure (steel-reinforced concrete) creates a strong shell that can withstand heavy use and the test of time. Concrete pools also handle environmental stress better than most pools – for instance, the robust shell and plaster finish tolerate the freeze-thaw cycles of Nashville winters without issues. There is no vinyl liner to puncture and no factory mold limitations. While a gunite pool might require resurfacing or re-tiling after many years, the structure itself can last decades (often 30+ years or more) with proper maintenance. This makes gunite a wise long-term investment for your home.
- Luxurious Aesthetics: Many homeowners choose gunite for its premium look and feel. These pools are fully custom-finished with your choice of plaster, aggregate (pebble), or glass tile surfaces, giving a high-end appearance. You’ll notice the solid feel underfoot and the beautiful, enduring finishes. A custom concrete pool can truly enhance your property’s value and become a stunning centerpiece of your backyard. From classic Roman-style pools to ultra-modern infinity pools, the aesthetics of gunite pools are hard to beat.
- Tailored to Your Landscape: Gunite pools are built in place, which means we design them to work harmoniously with your existing landscape and any elevation changes. Have a sloped yard or a challenging hillside? We can engineer the pool accordingly (even design vanishing edges or multi-level pools). Our team has experience building on all types of terrain, and we’ll ensure your pool fits naturally into your backyard layout. We’re also very familiar with the local soil conditions – including the rocky ground found in some Nashville areas – and know how to construct pools that hold up beautifully in our Middle TN environment.
Keep in mind that because of their custom nature, gunite pools do take longer to build than prefab pools. An average gunite pool project might take around 8 to 12 weeks from dig to swim-ready, depending on complexity. But rest assured, our efficient project management keeps the timeline as smooth as possible. In the end, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind luxury pool that is truly worth the wait.
If you value true customization, maximum durability, and a high-end, tailored design, a concrete/gunite pool is an excellent choice. Allison Companies has specialized in gunite construction for decades – we’ll create a masterpiece that transforms your backyard and brings years of enjoyment.
Fiberglass Pools – Fast Installation & Low Maintenance
In addition to gunite, we also offer top-of-the-line fiberglass pools for those who prefer a quicker installation or specific fiberglass designs. As an authorized builder of Blue Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools (a leading fiberglass pool manufacturer), we have a range of beautiful fiberglass pool models and sizes to choose from. Our team can help you pick the perfect shape that complements your home and meets your needs.
Benefits of fiberglass pools:
- Faster Installation: One big advantage of fiberglass pools is speed. Fiberglass pool shells are pre-manufactured in a factory and delivered ready to install in your yard. This means the on-site construction time is dramatically less than a gunite pool. In fact, a fiberglass pool can often be installed and operational in as little as 1–2 weeks, whereas a concrete pool might take a couple of months. If your priority is to start swimming as soon as possible or to have a pool ready by the upcoming season, fiberglass is the fastest route. The process involves excavating the hole, setting the one-piece fiberglass shell, hooking up plumbing and electric, then backfilling and finishing the patio/deck around it – a much simpler workflow than building a pool from scratch.
- Smooth, Low-Maintenance Surface: Fiberglass pools are known for their ultra-smooth interior surface. The shell is made of fiberglass resin with a special gelcoat finish that is non-porous and algae-resistant. This means less maintenance for you: the slick surface inhibits algae growth and is easy to clean, requiring fewer chemicals to keep the water balanced compared to a rough concrete surface. You also won’t need to periodically replace liners (as with vinyl pools) or re-plaster as frequently as a gunite pool. Many fiberglass pool owners love that the surface is gentle on feet and swimsuits – no scraped toes or snagged swimwear. If easy upkeep and a comfortable feel are high on your list, fiberglass delivers.
- Durability and Flexibility: Today’s fiberglass pools are very durable. The composite structure has a bit of flex, which allows the shell to withstand minor ground shifts or freeze conditions without cracking. You’ll never have to worry about rust, and with proper installation, issues like warping are extremely rare. The gelcoat finish is built to last for many years (often 20+ years before any resurfacing might be needed). Fiberglass pools also handle Tennessee’s weather well – the material tolerates our hot summers and cold snaps. Additionally, most fiberglass shells come with lengthy manufacturer warranties for peace of mind. Overall, a quality fiberglass pool provides a strong, long-lasting swimming pool option with minimal headaches down the line.
- Built-In Features and Styles: People sometimes think fiberglass pools are “one-size-fits-all,” but in truth there’s a great selection of shapes and features available. We offer fiberglass models that include popular amenities like built-in benches and seating ledges, entry steps, tanning ledges, and even integrated spas. From classic rectangular pools to free-form lagoon styles, there are many designs to fit different aesthetics. Fiberglass pools do come in predefined shapes, so customization is a bit limited compared to gunite, but the available designs cover a broad range – and we can enhance them with creative decking, landscaping, and surrounding features. If you have a compact yard or want a specific size, fiberglass can be a great solution as well. For pools larger than typical fiberglass sizes, concrete would be the way to go.
- Cost-Effective: In many cases, a fiberglass pool can be more affordable than a custom gunite pool. The exact pricing depends on the model and site conditions, but fiberglass generally has a medium upfront cost (more than vinyl, but often less than a large gunite pool). And because maintenance costs and long-term upkeep tend to be lower, fiberglass pools can offer savings over time. We strive to provide competitive pricing on our fiberglass pool packages – giving you a high-quality pool with the convenience of quick installation and lower maintenance.
In summary, fiberglass pools are an excellent choice if you want a quick-to-install, low-maintenance, and durable pool. They provide a sleek look and comfortable feel, with enough variety in shapes to find something you love. Allison Companies will handle your fiberglass pool installation from start to finish, including helping you select the perfect model and features for your backyard. You get the same quality workmanship and service we’re known for, just on a faster timeline!
Whether you choose a custom gunite pool or a premium fiberglass pool, rest assured that our team will deliver superior results. We are one of the few pool builders in Nashville, TN with deep expertise in both construction methods, so we can offer truly unbiased guidance on which option fits your needs. Many clients even incorporate both into their property (for example, a gunite pool with a separate fiberglass spa, or a fiberglass pool with a gunite spillover spa addition). We’ll discuss these possibilities during design to create your ideal setup.
Our Pool Design & Construction Process
At Allison Companies, we make the journey to owning a pool as seamless as possible. Building a pool is a significant project – but with our proven design/build process, you’ll know exactly what to expect and will stay informed every step of the way. Here’s an overview of how we take your pool from an idea to a sparkling reality:
- Free Consultation & Site Visit: It all starts with a conversation. Contact us to schedule a free on-site consultation with our team. We’ll come out to your home to assess your property, discuss your ideas, and answer any questions. Our experienced design consultants (often our owner personally) will listen to your vision – whether it’s a tranquil swim retreat for relaxation or a resort-style backyard for entertaining – and offer suggestions based on your space and budget. We’ll also evaluate factors like yard slope, accessibility, sun exposure, utilities, and any challenges (e.g. rocky soil or drainage considerations) so we can plan accordingly.
- Custom 3D Design & Proposal: After the initial meeting, we get to work on a tailored pool design. Our talented designers use advanced software to create detailed 2D plan drawings and 3D renderings of your pool and outdoor living area. This allows you to visualize exactly how your new pool will look in your backyard – from different angles, with your chosen features and materials. We’ll iterate with you on the design until it’s perfect. Along with the plans, we provide a clear proposal outlining the scope of work, timeline, and pricing. We strive to be transparent and comprehensive – you’ll see line items for everything included, so there are no surprises. Once you’re thrilled with the design and ready to move forward, we finalize the contract and schedule your project.
- Permitting and Approvals: You can leave the paperwork to us. As a licensed contractor familiar with local regulations, we will obtain all necessary permits for your pool build from the city/county. This includes building permits and any specific requirements for plumbing, electrical, etc. We’ll also ensure compliance with any homeowners’ association (HOA) guidelines if applicable. In Nashville and surrounding areas, a permanent safety fence or barrier around the pool is required by code (for the protection of children and pets), as well as possibly alarm devices on doors leading to the pool area. Rest assured, we handle these details and will guide you on meeting safety requirements. Our team coordinates any needed inspections throughout the build to keep everything up to code and on track.
- Construction & Project Management: Now the excitement really begins – breaking ground on your new pool! Our construction crew will handle all phases of the build with skill and efficiency. Typically, construction involves: excavation (digging the hole and forming the shape), installing steel rebar reinforcement (for gunite pools) or setting the fiberglass shell, rough-in of plumbing and electrical lines, shooting the gunite concrete (if applicable), installing tile and coping around the pool edges, building out any water features or spas, pouring or laying the deck/patio surrounding the pool, and finally interior surface finishing (plastering a gunite pool or acid-washing a fiberglass pool). It’s a multi-phase process requiring careful coordination – and we have it down to a science. We schedule our trusted trades and crews sequentially so progress is steady. Weather can sometimes cause minor delays (e.g. heavy rain or extreme heat can pause certain steps), but we pad the schedule appropriately and keep you updated. Throughout construction, we invite you to see the transformation in person – it’s your backyard, after all! Our project manager will communicate regularly about what’s completed and what’s next, so you’re never in the dark. We also handle any unexpected challenges. For example, if we encounter solid rock while excavating (common in parts of Middle TN), we have the equipment and expertise to remove it or adapt the design as needed. Our goal is to deliver your pool on schedule with top-notch quality. In general, expect around 8–10 weeks build time for a gunite pool, or a few weeks for fiberglass, from the start of excavation to the moment you can swim. More complex designs with extensive features may take longer, but we will have outlined that in the plan.
- Finishing Touches: Once the pool itself is built, we take care of all the finishing details that make it truly swim-ready and beautiful. This includes installing pool equipment (pump, filter, heater, automation systems, lights, etc.), filling the pool with water, balancing the water chemistry, and starting up all systems. We thoroughly clean the site and can add any landscaping or final masonry touches if those are part of your project. When everything is complete, we do a comprehensive walkthrough with you. We’ll show you how to operate your pool equipment, discuss maintenance best practices, and answer any questions. Our aim is that you feel fully comfortable and excited to use your new pool from day one.
- Ongoing Support & Maintenance: Our relationship doesn’t end when construction does. We stand behind our work and want your pool to remain in top condition. Allison Companies offers an optional maintenance program for our clients – we can provide professional pool service year-round to keep your water crystal clear and your pool running optimally. From regular cleanings to winterizing and opening each season, we’re here to help protect your investment. Additionally, the equipment we install comes with manufacturer warranties, and we address any post-build service needs promptly. In short, we’re your partner for the long haul – ready to assist with any upgrades, repairs, or questions down the line. Our goal is for you to simply relax and enjoy your pool for many years, with full confidence that we have your back.
By managing the entire design/build process in-house, we ensure consistent quality and accountability. Homeowners often tell us how smoothly the project went and how amazed they are at seeing their backyard transformed. Building a pool is a significant construction project – but Allison Companies makes it efficient, transparent, and even fun! We love sharing the excitement as the water goes in and your dream pool becomes reality.
Complete Outdoor Living Solutions
One big advantage of choosing Allison Companies is that we are not just pool builders – we are outdoor living specialists. Our mission is to create your perfect backyard retreat, which often means incorporating more than just the pool itself. If you can envision it in your outdoor space, we can likely design and build it.
Some of the custom outdoor features we offer include:
- Pool Houses & Outdoor Structures: Need a place to change, shower, or store equipment? Want a stylish cabana or pavilion for shade and entertaining? We build all kinds of poolside structures. From small equipment storage sheds to full pool houses with bathrooms and kitchens, our team can construct the ideal addition to complement your pool. A pool house can provide a convenient restroom (so guests don’t track water inside), a bar or serving area, or even a guest suite – all matching the architectural style you desire. We also design pergolas, gazebos, and arbors to add character and comfort around the pool.
- Outdoor Kitchens & Bars: Take your outdoor parties to the next level with a custom outdoor kitchen or swim-up bar. We can integrate features like built-in grills, pizza ovens, refrigerators, sinks, and expansive counter space right into your pool patio design. Imagine grilling poolside while your family lounges in the water, or enjoying a drink at your pool’s swim-up bar. We’ll make sure your outdoor cooking/dining area is as functional as your indoor kitchen – with utilities, lighting, and durable finishes to withstand the elements.
- Fire Features: Water and fire make a magical combination in a backyard. We frequently add fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and decorative fire bowls around our pools. A fire feature not only provides warmth and year-round enjoyment, but also adds dramatic visual appeal, especially at night. Picture yourself roasting marshmallows by the fire after an evening swim, or relaxing in the spa with the glow of flames nearby. We use quality gas-burning fire features (or wood-burning, if preferred) that are safe and easy to use.
- Custom Water Features: Elevate the ambiance of your pool with bespoke water features. The soothing sound and motion of water can turn your pool area into a resort-like escape. We design cascading waterfalls built from natural rock, elegant fountain bubblers on tanning ledges, decorative scuppers and spillways, deck jets that arc into the pool – you name it. One popular option is a sheer descent waterfall on a raised wall, which creates a clear curtain of water flowing into the pool. We can also integrate LED lighting into water features for a stunning effect after dark.
- Spa and Hot Tubs: Nothing completes a backyard oasis like a spa. We can build a custom gunite spa attached to your pool or as a standalone feature, complete with powerful jets, heating, and comfortable seating. Our designs ensure the spa complements the pool aesthetically – often we do a raised spa that cascades into the pool, which looks beautiful. If you prefer a prefabricated hot tub, we can incorporate it into the design seamlessly as well (for example, sinking a hot tub into the deck with surrounding stonework). A spa provides year-round enjoyment and therapeutic relaxation, and it’s a favorite add-on for many clients.
- Beautiful Pool Decks & Lighting: The decking or patio around your pool is critical for both function and style. We offer a wide range of deck materials – from stamped or stained concrete, to natural stone pavers like travertine and flagstone, to cool-touch acrylic overlays and more. Our expert masons will create a safe, slip-resistant, and visually pleasing deck that ties everything together. We also include thoughtful touches like LED landscape lighting around the pool area, so you can enjoy your outdoor space in the evenings. Good lighting also adds safety and can highlight focal points (like illuminating your pool’s water features or architecture at night).
In short, we provide turnkey outdoor living solutions. Many of our projects involve designing a cohesive backyard that might include the pool, a patio/lounge area, landscaping, fencing, and all the amenities mentioned above in one integrated plan. This comprehensive approach means you don’t have to juggle multiple contractors – we handle it all, delivering a finished outdoor environment ready for you to enjoy. Our master craftsmen can “tailor your swimming pool with any number of amenities”, including pool houses, custom water features, spas, fireplaces, fire pits, and much more. The result is an outdoor living space that is not only stunning but also highly functional for your lifestyle.
When you work with Allison Companies, you’re truly getting a one-stop shop for your backyard transformation. We take pride in our ability to coordinate all these elements into a harmonious design. The convenience for you and the consistent quality of workmanship will ensure your entire project comes out perfectly, down to the last detail.

FAQs – Nashville Pool Building
Q: How much does it cost to build a custom swimming pool in Nashville, TN?
A: The cost of an inground pool can vary widely depending on the type of pool, size, and features you choose. In Middle Tennessee, a basic fiberglass pool project might start around the $40,000-$50,000 range, whereas a larger, fully custom gunite (concrete) pool with luxury features can be $100,000 or more. Most custom gunite pools we build in the Nashville area tend to fall in the $70k-$100k+ range once you factor in high-end finishes, decking, and extras. Fiberglass pools, being pre-made, often come in a bit lower – maybe $50k-$80k depending on the model and installation specifics. It’s important to remember every project is unique. We will provide a detailed estimate tailored to your design. We can also work with you to adjust scope or features to fit a target budget. While a pool is a significant investment, it can add value to your home and, more importantly, provide years of enjoyment. We’re transparent about costs and will help you understand all the factors involved so you can make the best decision for your family.
Q: How long does it take to install a swimming pool?
A: Timeline depends on the pool type and complexity of the project. A straightforward fiberglass pool installation is very quick – often 2 to 3 weeks from start of excavation to swim-ready completion. Because the shell is factory-built, it’s mainly a matter of preparing the site and hooking everything up. In contrast, a custom gunite pool takes longer due to the on-site construction steps; typically around 8 to 12 weeks for most residential projects. This includes time for curing of concrete, tile and stone work, etc. More elaborate designs (with extensive hardscaping, multiple structures, or bad weather delays) could extend beyond that. When we schedule your project, we’ll give you a projected completion window. We pride ourselves on efficient project management – coordinating tasks so there’s steady progress. Our goal is always to have your pool ready as quickly as quality allows (nobody likes unnecessary delays!). If you have a target date (for example, you want the pool open by Memorial Day or a special event), let us know and we will do our best to meet it. On average, from the day we break ground to the day you’re filling the pool with water, about 2-3 months is a good rule of thumb for gunite pools in this area. And remember, good things are worth the wait!
Q: Gunite vs. fiberglass – which is better for me?
A: Both gunite (concrete) and fiberglass pools have their pros and cons, and the “best” choice depends on your priorities. Go with a gunite pool if you value total customization – you can have any shape/size/depth, plus integrate features like spas, ledges, and waterfalls exactly how you want. Gunite is also the best for a truly large or deep pool, since fiberglass shells have size limits (fiberglass pools are generally max ~16 feet wide, 40 feet long). Additionally, concrete pools have a solid, luxury feel and can be upgraded with high-end finishes (mosaics, pebble surfaces, etc.). The trade-offs: gunite pools cost more upfront on average and take longer to build, and their porous surface may require a bit more maintenance (periodic brushing to prevent algae, and resurfacing after many years). On the other hand, choose a fiberglass pool if you want a faster installation (get swimming sooner) and a lower-maintenance surface. Fiberglass pools come in beautiful pre-designed shapes and include features like built-in steps and benches. Their glossy gelcoat surface is non-abrasive and resists algae, meaning less cleaning and chemical use. Fiberglass pools are also very durable for our climate, flexing with soil movement and not needing liner replacements. The main limitation is less design flexibility – you’ll pick from standard models, so if you have a very specific or creative shape in mind, gunite may be better. Fiberglass shells also can’t be extremely large or deep due to transport constraints. In summary, fiberglass = convenience and low upkeep, gunite = ultimate customization and premium longevity. We install both types of pools and would be happy to discuss your specific needs to determine the ideal choice. Sometimes the decision comes down to budget and timeline as well. No matter which you choose, we’ll ensure you get a top-quality result.
Q: Do I need a permit or a fence for my new pool in Nashville?
A: Yes. In Tennessee (and virtually everywhere in the US), inground swimming pools require a building permit from your local municipality. When you work with Allison Companies, we handle the permitting process on your behalf – from submitting plans to scheduling inspections – so you don’t have to worry about the paperwork. We are very familiar with Metro Nashville and surrounding county permit offices and will ensure everything is filed correctly. Along with the permit, you will need to plan for a pool barrier (fence) as required by safety codes. Local building codes mandate that pools be enclosed by a fence or other approved barrier of a certain height (usually at least 4 feet) with self-closing, self-latching gates. This is to prevent unsupervised access by small children, which is extremely important. If your yard already has a compliant fence, great – if not, we can include a perimeter fence in your project scope or advise on what to install. Additionally, some areas (for example, Brentwood and other cities) may require door alarms or pool alarms for any doors that lead directly to the pool area. We will make sure your pool meets all safety requirements, including alarms, fencing, covers, and entrapment-proof drains as needed. During the design, we’ll discuss the fence layout and any landscape or privacy considerations you have. By the time your pool is finished, it will not only be beautiful but also fully compliant with codes and safe for your family. In short: permits and a proper fence are required, and we’ve got you covered on fulfilling those needs.
Q: Do you offer any warranties or maintenance services after the pool is built?
A: Absolutely. We stand by the quality of our work and the equipment we install. All of our pools come with warranties – for example, the pool structure and interior surface typically carry a warranty (gunite shells often have structural warranties, and fiberglass shells come with manufacturer warranties on structure and surface). The exact terms will be provided in your contract. We also register the warranties on all pumps, filters, heaters, and other equipment with their manufacturers, so you’re protected (most pool equipment brands offer 1-3 year warranties or more, which we pass through to you). Beyond formal warranties, Allison Companies is committed to ongoing customer support. If you ever have an issue or question, you can call us and we’ll help resolve it. Many potential issues can be prevented or minimized with proper
upkeep – which is why we offer an optional maintenance program to all clients. Our maintenance team can handle routine tasks like cleaning, water balancing, and equipment checks on a schedule that suits you (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.). Even if you choose to maintain the pool yourself, we’re happy to come out for pool school after construction to show you how everything works. And if something needs repair under warranty, we’ll coordinate the fix promptly. In summary, we don’t just build your pool and disappear – we’re here to ensure it remains a source of joy and not stress. Our goal is a lifelong relationship as your pool care partner. Many of our clients continue with us for years of service, and refer friends and family, which is the greatest compliment. Your satisfaction for the long term is our priority.
